The beloved Neral-Matheran Toy Train is set to return from November 6, 2025, enthralling travellers, tourists, and hill-station enthusiasts once again. Central Railway has officially announced the return of the historic train service following the monsoon season's annual break, allowing visitors to enjoy one of the most picturesque narrow-gauge train excursions. As the reopening approaches, keeping an eye on the irctc running status can help travellers plan their journey smoothly and avoid any last-minute surprises.

This change marks the return to one of Maharashtra's most famous hill station trips that connects Neral along the Mumbai-Pune route with Matheran which is a well-known tourist destination that is not accessible by car and situated around 80km away from Mumbai.

Seasonal Suspension Comes to an End

Each year, the Neral-Matheran Toy Train operation is halted during the monsoon time (June through October) because of safety concerns. The region is subject to heavy rain which makes the hill's narrow tracks slippery and prone to landslides.

In this time the shuttle service among Aman Lodge and Matheran continue to provide local convenience. But, with clear skies and the peak tourist season coming up, Central Railway has decided to re-open full-time services that run between Neral and Matheran beginning on November 6, 2025.

An Aerial View of the Iconic Neral-Matheran Road

The Toy Train Neral-Matheran was in operation since 1907, providing the passengers a slow, nostalgic train ride across lush, green valleys fast turns, and breathtaking mountain views. It covers approximately 21 kilometers, it takes between two to 2.5 hours to get to Matheran from Neral and climbs from 39 m to 803 m over sea level.

The track has 1200 bridges and 281 curving curves and seven tunnels, making it an amazing example of the early Indian railway technology. The constant hum of the engine's small cylinder along with the cool breeze and stunning views make the trip unforgettable, particularly for those who are visiting Matheran for the first time.
